Social Skills Training

Your child can build friendships & establish a social life!

Learning social skills in a social environment with one's peers is most effective.

That's why I've created a very unique space within my office (one of just a handful in the greater Los Angeles area) where your child has the freedom to role-play, make art, play games and even practice cooking in order to become aware of themself in relationship to others, just like in their natural environment.

This unique environment becomes "play time" for many as they enjoy social interaction with new-found friends, however serious learning is taking place.

What Are Social Skills?

Social skills are a set of actions that allow us to communicate with others, to empathize and relate to them and to build relationships through socialization.  Learning social skills begins in childhood and continues, for most of us, through a lifetime as we hone these skills to accommodate different situations and relationships.

Social skills are both verbal and non-verbal.  Examples of good verbal social skills include speaking appropriately for a given situation, being engaging in our speech and having good range of vocal tone and quality of voice.

An example of non-verbal social skills, such as body language, includes making proper eye contact when we're being spoken to, gesturing, taking care not to invade another's personal space by standing too close and nodding our head to indicate that we understand what is being said.

It's important that we learn to master social skills because, quite simply, others judge
us based upon them.  Our success in life is often related to our confidence, our ability to communicate and be cooperative with others.  In short:  Our social skills!

Social Skills Training Includes:

  • Initiating conversations
  • Interpreteting facial expressions
  • Learning to compromise
  • Controlling anger
  • Thinking about consequences of certain behavior
  • Listening to others
  • Complying with instructions
  • Doing your share
  • Listening to other's ideas
  • Being interested in others
  • Encouraging others
  • Helping others
  • Apologizing and accepting blame

Social skills training for children with ADD/ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is challenging, yet tremendously rewarding, as your child masters skills to maters skills designed to build self-esteem and friendships.  These
are skills that can last a lifetime!
